Context

The M.B.T. (Model Based Testing) is a test approach associated with test engineering process based on Model Driven Engineering. In recent years, it was mainly deployed in the industry on the descending phase of the V lifecycle, i.e. from functional specifications to implementation through design. Having proved the benefits of efficiency and profitability, Model Based Engineering interests henceforth the ascending phase of the V cycle, i.e. all the validation steps, more and more expensive and critical on a project.

Observations and hypotheses

It is now estimated that the cost of validation of a product is around 50% of total project costs.

Many studies have shown that a malfunction or a bug has a cost at least 1000 times greater when it is found during the operational life of the product. Furthermore, validation teams are liable for the system quality.

Currently, the validation process having no systematic and automatic process, it is often underestimated and outsourced to reduce costs.

All these factors affect the quality of current products. The main reason is probably that the validation steps don’t currently have the necessary level of maturity.
